Biography (简介)

Chunwei Tian, a Professor at the School of Computer Science and Technology, Harbin Institute of Technology, a doctoral supervisor, and a Shenzhou Scholar. He received his Ph.D. degree in Computer Application Technology from Harbin Institute of Technology in March 2021, under the supervision of Prof. Xu Yong, a national distinguished scholar. His postdoctoral co-advisor was Prof. Zhang Yanning (IEEE Fellow), Vice President of Northwestern Polytechnical University and a nationally recognized expert. He is currently with the Machine Learning Center at Harbin Institute of Technology, led by Prof. Zuo Wangmeng , a globally Highly Cited Researcher. From 2022 to 2025, he was listed among the World’s Top 2% Scientists by Stanford University. He was also invited to the Huawei “Genius Youth” interview program. His research interests include Image/Video Restoration and Recognition, Image Generation, Speech Processing ,Intelligent Transportation, Multimodal and Large Models.

He has published more than 100 papers in leading international journals such as the IEEE Transactions series, Pattern Recognition, Neural Networks, and Information Fusion. He has authored one monograph and one textbook. His publications include eight ESI Highly Cited Papers (including three Hot Papers), four cover papers in top-tier journals, and four benchmark papers in the international field of image super-resolution. One of his research achievements has been applied in CT imaging systems of a U.S. medical imaging company, and another has been adopted in Apple’s iOS camera system.

He received the Best Paper Award from Pattern Recognition, one of the top international journals in pattern recognition (ranked first author), the International Signal Processing Association Blog Paper(ranked first author),the Second Prize of the Natural Science Award of the Chinese Society for Image and Graphics(ranked first author),and the First Prize of the Guangdong Province Natural Science Award. He also served as a member of the editorial board or guest editor of SCI journals such as CAAI Transaction on Intelligence Technology, IEEE TFS, IEEE TCE. He managed several projects including the National Natural Science Foundation of China (Young) Fund, Provincial General (Young) Fund, China Postdoctoral Special Funding (General) Project, TCL Fund, CAAI-Huawei Fund, etc.

2. Application Requirements

  1. Basic Requirements for Graduate (Master’s/PhD) Applicants: 1) Recommended students in Computer Science/Software Engineering/Artificial Intelligence are preferred. 2) Undergraduate and master’s students who have demonstrated strong performance in the research group are preferred. 3) Applicants with the ability to solve engineering problems are preferred.

  2. Deeper Requirements for Graduate (Master’s/PhD) Applicants: Self-motivation is essential, and applicants are advised to maintain firm goals. It is recommended that master’s students focus on solid research, publish high-quality papers, and develop independent problem-solving ability, which is beneficial for both employment and further academic study.

  3. For PhD applicants, please meet the school requirements for PhD application/direct PhD admission. Before formal school application, please select one recent top paper from IEEE Transactions (e.g., TPAMI/TIP), top journals (e.g., PR/NN/Information Fusion), or top conferences (e.g., CVPR/ICCV/ECCV/IJCAI/ACM MM/AAAI), and prepare one document including your reading insights, research interests, research foundation, and proposed PhD research plan, then send it to my email with your CV.
  4. For Direct-PhD applicants, before contacting me, please publish at least one paper in a CAS Tier-2 (or above) journal or a CCF A/B conference.
  5. For applicants who already hold a master’s degree and plan to apply for a PhD, before contacting me, please obtain valid language scores (CET-6 or IELTS/TOEFL/GRE; final requirements follow school rules). In research output, please have at least one paper as student first author (or student second author with advisor first author) in CAS Tier-1 or above (including at least one Tier-1 paper), or one CCF-A conference paper, or two CAS Tier-2-or-above ACM/IEEE Transactions papers.

PhD Admissions: PhD admissions are organized each year in September and March, and enrollment is in March or September of the following year. Applicants are also welcome to apply through the HIT “Quick Response” Program (please refer to HIT Graduate School admission notices). Integrity comes first, ability second. Enrollment channels include HIT main campus, Zhengzhou Research Institute, and Zhongguancun.
